On August 2, 1985, Delta Flight 191, a Lockheed L-1011, was approaching the runway from the opposite direction to this view, out of the upper left corner of the photo in a violent thunderstorm with 163 people on board. It flew into a windshear which forced it down on Highway 114, the highway running across the view, striking a car with its left engine, decapitating the 20 year old driver. The left wing hit the white water tanks on the right, which sported a big dent for years afterward. Thank goodness they weren't fuel tanks. The jet broke up on the airport short of the runway with the blackened empennage the only recognizable part remaining. A handful of people survived in the tail, but 136 did not.
I guess nobody wants to hear these stories on takeoff, huh?
