Crossing the Potomac River into DC on the Metro. That's the 14th Street Bridge where Air Florida Flight 90, a Boeing 737, impacted tail first, crushing four people in their cars, then smashing through the ice of the river on January 13, 1982. Only five people survived out of 79 on board. Lenny Skutnik, stuck in traffic, became a hero that day by jumping into the freezing cold water to fish some survivors out. Arland Williams was one of the six people in the plane to survive the impact but was trapped in his seat by a jammed seat belt. When the rescue chopper threw him a line, he kept passing it on to other passengers who could more easily be saved. He drowned before they could free him. Now the 14th Street bridge is called the Arland D. Williams Jr. Memorial Bridge.
