This is the view down into the Missouri River valley from Sgt. Floyd's Monument. The river has been restlessly wriggling back and forth across this valley for hundreds of thousands of years, constantly changing its course. It was considerably wilder when Lewis & Clark passed through, thickly forested and teeming with wildlife. Now the channel of the river has been straightened and fixed in place, dams prevent floods, and forest has been cut down to grow crops in nice neat plots.
